THE POWER OF 10+

It's been three years since I got my first Samsung Note. Have I ever wistfully looked back at the iPhone since then? No! Am I still as enthusiastic about the features and quality as I was the first day? Yes! 

You'd think that you'd take things for granted over time and that you'd only be happy about new features to a limited extent. But I'm still regularly dropping my jaw when the range of functions is extended - that's what last happened when I got the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE10+, which I've been putting to the test for about 2 months now. Small spoiler at the beginning: Samsung manages to exceed my expectations every time. But one after the other. What's so great about it?

Drei Jahre ist es her, dass ich mein erstes Samsung Note bekommen habe. Ob ich seither jemals wehmütig zum iPhone (zurück)geschielt habe? Nein! Ob  ich immer noch von der Funktionen und die Qualität begeistert bin, wie am ersten Tag? Ja! 

Man sollte meinen, dass man mit der Zeit die Dinge als gegeben hinnimmt und sich über Neuerungen nur mehr begrenzt freut. Mir kippt aber immer noch regelmäßig die Kinnlade runter, wenn die Bandbreite an Funktionen erweitert wird - so geschehen zuletzt als ich das SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE10+  bekommen habe, das ich jetzt rund seit 2 Monaten auf Herz und Nieren teste. Kleiner Spoiler am Anfang: Samsung schafft es meine Erwartungen jedes Mal zu übertreffen. Aber mal der Reihe nach. Was ist denn so toll dran?

The function that is most important to me personally is the camera and the crystal-clear image quality that goes with it. That was great with the previous models, but now I have five(!) cameras that help me take the perfect pictures, thanks to the variable aperture that automatically adjusts to the lighting conditions, the 12 MP wide-angle lens, the 16 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, live focus (bokeh effect) and automatic scene optimisation. As with the predecessor models, I can shoot in pro mode as well as in auto mode, where I can adjust various settings as with a SLR camera and then save the images in RAW format. Thus: Bye bulky SLR camera. What I personally also find very practical is that I can set the image formats (3:4, 9:16, 1:1 or fullscreen) in order to have the right format for every application. If you know my pictures on Instagram & Co, you know that I love to photograph with the Bokeh effect. The GALAXY NOTE10/+ has five different bokeh effects, which I can swap and adjust not only before shooting, but also after - when the photo is taken. 

With Note 10/+, this bokeh effect - drum roll please - can also be applied to videos! This has never been done before on smartphones and actually changes a lot. Videos automatically look more professional. 

But that's not all, because there is also a function called "audio zoom" and that's exactly what it is: if you zoom in or out on a motif, it also has an effect on the associated sound. This means you decide which sound you want to emphasize in the video. If you zoom in on a noise-producing motif, this noise becomes louder and vice versa. 

Samsung can also pat itself on the back for the integrated video stabilizer. Gimbel? Off to the corner with it! How exactly does it work that annoying blurred (and we're still talking about videos made with a smartphone) videos are a thing of the past? The camera uses information from a library of over a million images to predict motion and can therefore reduce vibrations in the video. Unbelievable!

HDR10+ also ensures that the recordings are true to color and rich in detail. This combined with Dynamic Tone Mapping results in perfect 4K UHD videos. 

Gone are the days when the video had to be exported for a long time to be edited, because this can now be done with the GALAXY NOTE10/+. With the integrated video editing program you can insert subtitles, create perfect transitions, edit videos in parallel, adjust speeds and insert S Pen illustrations.

Die Funktion, die mir persönlich am wichtigsten ist, ist die Kamera und die damit zusammenhängende kristallklare Bildqualität. Das war bei den Vorgängermodellen schon großartig, aber jetzt habe ich ganze fünf(!) Kameras, die mir dabei helfen, die perfekten Bilder zu schießen - dank der variablen Blende, die sich automatisch an die Lichtverhältnisse anpasst, dem 12 MP Weitwinkelobjektiv, dem 16 MP Ultra-Weitwinkelobjektiv sowie Live-Fokus (Bokeh-Effekt) und automatischer Szenenoptimierung. Wie auch schon bei den Vorgängermodellen, kann ich neben dem Automatikmodus auch im Pro-Modus fotografieren, wo ich diverse Einstellungen wie bei einer Spiegelreflexkamera einstellen kann und die Bilder dann auch im RAW-Format abgespeichert werden. Somit: Tschüss unhandliche Spiegelreflexkamera. Was ich persönlich auch sehr praktisch finde ist, dass ich die Bildformate (3:4, 9:16, 1:1 oder fullscreen) einstellen kann, um für jedes Einsatzgebiet das passende Format zu haben. Wer meine Bilder auf Instagram & Co kennt, weiß, dass ich es liebe mit dem Bokeh-Effekt zu fotografieren. Das GALAXY NOTE10/+ hat fünf unterschiedliche Bokeh-Effekte, die ich nicht nur vor dem Fotografieren, sondern auch noch danach - wenn das Foto im Kasten ist - tauschen und anpassen kann. 

Beim Note 10/+ kann dieser Bokeh-Effekt -  bitte um Trommelwirbel - auch bei Videos angewendet werden! Das ist bei Smartphones bis dato noch nie dagewesen und verändert tatsächlich einiges. Videos sehen damit automatisch professioneller aus. 

Aber damit nicht genug, denn es gibt auch eine Funktion die sich „Audio-Zoom“ nennt und ist genau das: zoomt man an ein Motiv ran oder weg, dann wirkt sich das auch auf dem damit verbundenen Sound aus. Das heisst, man entscheidet, welchen Sound man im Video betonen möchte. Zoomt man an ein Geräusche erzeugendes Motiv ran, wird dieses Geräusch lauter und vice versa. 

Auch für den integrierten Video-Stabilisator darf sich Samsung auf die Schulter klopfen. Gimbel? Ab in die Ecke damit! Wie genau es funktioniert, dass störende Verwacklungen bei (und wir reden wohl gemerkt immer noch von mit einem Smartphone gemachten) Videos der Vergangenheit angehören?: Die Kamera nutzt Informationen aus einer Bibliothek von über einer Millionen Bildern, um Bewegungen vorauszusehen und kann dadurch Vibrationen im Video reduzieren. Unglaublich!

HDR10+ sorgt ausserdem dafür, dass die Aufnahmen farbgetreu und detailreich ausfallen. Das kombiniert mit Dynamic Tone Mapping ergibt perfekte Videos in 4K UHD. 

Vorbei sind auch die Zeiten, wo das Video dann langwierig exportiert werden musste um bearbeitet zu werden, denn auch das kann jetzt gleich am GALAXY NOTE10/+ erledigt werden. Mit dem integrierten Video-Editing Programm lassen sich Untertitel einfügen, Übergänge perfekt gestalten, Videos parallel bearbeiten, Geschwindigkeiten anpassen und S Pen Illustrationen einfügen.

The camera of the GALAYY NOTE 10/+ can do something else as well! Now I have always a sort of measuring tape with me. By the combination of the 3D DepthVision camera and AR-Intelligence I only need to point my camera at objects, which are then measured in no time. The next visit to IKEA will therefore be a very special experience that I am already extremely looking forward to. 

With the Note10+ I can take an additional 360° picture of the objects, which can then be used in an animated GIF. 

One sees me comparatively rarely on pictures, if I do, I had someone at my side who took the photos of me. Now that I can use the integrated, ergonomic S Pen not only as a kind of remote control, but also to switch and zoom between the modes and cameras from a distance, I only need a tripod to take photos as described above.

Of course, the S Pen can also be used to control presentations, adjust the volume or slide through the picture gallery (which I personally find very practical. There is nothing more disturbing than showing my pictures to someone and then having to wipe the display with my finger to get to the next picture.)

Und noch was kann die Kamera vom GALAYY NOTE 10/+ ! Ich habe jetzt immer eine Art Maßband mit dabei. Durch die Kombination der der 3D DepthVision Kamera und AR-Intelligenz brauche ich meine Kamera nur noch auf Gegenstände richten, die dann in Windeseile abgemessen werden. Der nächste IKEA-Besuch wird daher bestimmt ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis auf das ich mich jetzt schon extrem freu. 

Mit dem Note10+ kann ich von den Gegenstände zusätzlich noch eine 360° Aufnahme machen, die dann wiederum in ein animiertes  GIF verwandte werden können. 

Man sieht mich vergleichsweise selten auf Bildern, wenn doch, dann hatte ich bisher jemanden an der Seite der/die Fotos von mir gemacht hat. Nachdem ich den integrierten, ergonomischen S Pen jetzt aber nicht mehr nur als eine Art Fernbedienung zum Auslösen verwenden kann, sondern damit auch zwischen den einzelnen Modi und Kameras aus einer Entfernung  switchen und zoomen kann, braucht es nur noch ein Stativ um Fotos wie oben beschrieben zu machen.

Natürlich lassen sich mit dem S Pen auch Präsentationen steuern, die Lautstärke regeln oder die Bildergalerie durchsliden (was ich persönlich ja sehr praktisch finde. Es gibt nicht störenderes, als wenn ich jemandem meine Bilder zeigen möchte und dann immer störend mit meinem Finger am Display wischen muss, um zum nächsten Bild zu gelangen.)

Of course, the core competence of the S Pen has not changed either: It can still be used to make sketches and drawings and to write notes. But here, too, there is a deluxe functional upgrade. The handwritten notes can be converted into a text with just a tap on them, which can then be exported directly as a Word document or PDF, which makes my work easier and helps to make it more efficient. Gone are the days when I had to transcribe my notes or carry my laptop with me everywhere. Bye notepad and ballpoint pen, it was nice with you, but you are outdated! And also you dear laptop, you may allow yourselves a few breathers. 

My mobile phone is also used very often when it says "Netflix & chill". The frameless Cinematic Infinity-O display is made for it. No matter what the lighting conditions, the display with HDR10+ adapts and offers me in combination with the Dynamic Tone Mapping and three-dimensional Dolby atmosphere sound through the integrated AKG speakers the perfect multimedia experience.

But that's not all, there are still a number of small functions that have a big influence on my daily life: unlike the Note9, the GALAXY NOTE10/+, for example, has an integrated ultrasound fingerprint scanner on the display to unlock it, it retrieves my data from SamsungPass and automatically inserts it into various forms or starts my e-banking app. All this I did before via face recognition or code entry (both functions are still available of course), but the ultrasound fingerprint scanner speeds up the process considerably. 

Probably nobody has missed the reports about the influence of blue light on us. Samsung immediately took this as an opportunity to integrate a blue light filter that doesn't change the colours on the display. In addition, there is a function that amplifies this filter and dips the screen into a yellow tone. I have set this function so that it is automatically deactivated/activated daily at sunset or sunrise. 

I was also very grateful for the new PowerShare function on one or the other day. Although the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE10/+ is equipped with a 4,300 mAh battery and intelligent battery management, and usually takes me through the day with a charge, but there are days where that's not even enough and I of course have no power bank or a charging cable with me. But with the PowerShare function I can get new power from another (Qi-compatible) device, or I can recharge my Galaxy Buds myself by simply placing the device on top of mine.

Selbstverständlich hat sich auch die Kernzkompetenz des S Pen nicht verändert: Nach wie vor lassen sich damit Skizzen und Zeichnungen anfertigen, sowie Notizen niederschreiben. Aber auch hier gibt es ein Funktions-Upgrade deluxe. Die handschriftlichen Notizen können nämlich mit nur einem Tippen auf diese in einen Text umgewandelt werden, der dann als Word-Dokument oder PDF direkt exportiert werden kann, was mir die Arbeit erleichtert und dabei hilft effizienter zu gestalten. Vorbei die Zeiten, als ich meine Mitschriften quasi noch transkribiert habe oder überall meinen Laptop mitschleppen musste. Tschüss Notizblock und Kugelschreiber, es war schön mit euch, aber ihr habt ausgedient! Und auch du lieber Laptop, darfst dir ein paar Verschnaufpausen gönnen. 

Mein Handy kommt auch sehr oft zum Einsatz, wenn es heißt „Netflix & chill“. Das rahmenlose Cinematic Infinity-O Display ist dafür wie gemacht. Egal wie die Lichtverhältnisse sind, das Display mit HDR10+  passt sich an und bietet mir in Kombination mit dem Dynamic Tone Mapping und dreidimensionalen Dolby Atmosphäre Sound durch die integrierten AKG Lautsprecher demnach das perfekte Multimedia-Erlebnis.

Damit aber nicht genug, es gibt noch eine Reihe an kleinen Funktionen, die aber großen Einfluss in meinem täglichen Leben haben: gegenüber dem Note9 verfügt das GALAXY NOTE10/+ zum Beispiel über einen integrierten Ultraschall-Fingerabdruckscanner am Display, um es zu entsperren, meine Daten von SamsungPass aufzurufen und in div. Formulare automatisch einzufügen oder meine e-Banking-App zu starten. All das hab ich zuvor via Gesichtserkennung oder Codeeingabe (beide Funktionen sind natürlich noch verfügbar) gemacht, der Ultraschall-Fingerabdruckscanner beschleunigt die Vorgänge aber deutlich. 

An den Berichten über den Einfluss von Blaulicht auf uns, ist vermutlich kaum jemand vorbeigekommen. Samsung hat das gleich als Anlass genommen, einen Blaulichtfilter zu integrieren, der jedoch die Farben am Display nicht ändert. Zusätzlich gibt es eine Funktion, die diesen Filter nochmals verstärkt und den Bildschirm, dann in einen Gelbton taucht. Ich habe diese Funktion so eingestellt, dass sie täglich automatisch bei Sonnenuntergang bzw. Sonnenaufgang de-/aktiviert wird. 

Auch für die neue PowerShare-Funktion war ich an dem einen oder anderen Tag schon sehr dankbar. Zwar ist das SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE10/+ mit einem ausdauernden 4.300 mAh Akku und intelligentem Batteriemanagment ausgestattet, und bringt mich mit einer Ladung normalerweise locker durch den Tag, aber es gibt Tage wo nichtmal das reicht und ich natürlich genau dann keine Powerbank oder ein Ladekabel dabei habe. Mit der PowerShare-Funktion kann ich aber von einem anderen (Qi-kompatiblen) Gerät neue Energie bekommen, oder aber auch selbst meine Galaxy Buds aufladen, indem ich das jeweilige Gerät einfach nur auf meines lege.   

Before I get to the hard facts, here are a few infos that might be of interest to the Apple users among you. In conversations I am always confronted with the argument that one has gotten so used to the user interface (UI) of the iPhone that one doesn't even consider switching to Samsung, even if many features would speak for it. Let me tell you: the UI isn't even that different, because it's based on intuitive gestures that nobody can and could reinvent. Samsung uses the so-called One UI, which is based on natural, intuitive gestures and is aimed at better accessibility. 

Connectivity is no longer a reason either: Samsung Dex (an app) lets you drag and drop data onto your Mac or PC and edit it there (if you need a bigger screen). 

And here are the promised hard facts: 

The SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10/+ has a 7nm processor and an impressive 12 GB RAM (or 8 GB for Note10). This makes fast gaming (I can't say much about this, because I simply don't have anything to do with it, but according to various reports hardcore gamers rave about this device), streaming and multitasking possible. The memory is also not to be neglected: 512 GB, which - with the NOTE10+ - can be expanded to 1TB using a microSD card. By the way, if you don't need the slot for the microSD card, you can use it for a second SIM and be reachable with one device on two numbers in parallel. I find this very practical especially abroad where I almost always get a SIM card. But also the times where I carry my company and private mobile phone around with me are over. 

By the way, if the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE was a bit too big for you so far, you can be happy now: In addition to the Note10+ with 6.8" display, there is also the NOTE10 with 6.3".

Both models are super slim with only 7.9mm and fit perfectly in the hand. In addition, there is the display made of Gorilla Glass 6 (the most robust currently available on the market) - the days when your mobile phone slips out of your hand and the display jumps are over. 

All I can do now is say "thank you". Thank you Samsung for making my life a lot easier and more efficient with the GALAXY NOTE10+!

Bevor ich jetzt noch zu den Hardfacts komme, hier noch ein paar Infos, die vor allem die Apple-Nutzer unter euch interessieren könnten. In Gesprächen werde ich immer wieder mit dem Argument konfrontiert, dass man sich doch schon so an die User Interface (UI) des iPhones gewöhnt hat, dass man deshalb erst gar keinen Umstieg auf Samsung in Betracht zieht, auch wenn viele Features dafür sprechen würden. Lasst euch sagen: die UI ist gar nicht mal so anders, denn sie beruht auf intuitiven Gesten, die niemand neu erfinden kann und konnte. Samsung nutzt die so genannte One UI, die auf natürlichen, intuitiven Gesten beruht und auf bessere Erreichbarkeit ausgerichtet ist. 

Auch die Connectivity ist kein Grund mehr: Mit Samsung Dex (einer App) lassen sich Daten ganz einfach per Drag & Drop auf Mac oder PC ziehen und dort bearbeiten (wenn man ein größerer Screen von Nöten ist). 

So. Und hier noch die versprochenen Hardfacts: 

Das SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10/+ verfügt über einen  7nm-Prozessor und beeindruckenden 12 GB RAM (bzw. 8 GB beim Note10). Das macht schnelles Gaming (hierzu kann ich wenig sagen, weil ich damit schlicht und einfach nichts am Hut habe, aber lt. div. Berichten schwärmen Hardcore-Gamer auf dieses Gerät), Streaming und Multitasking möglich. Der Speicher ist ebenfalls nicht zu vernachlässigen: 512 GB, der - beim NOTE10+ mittels einer microSD-Karte auf 1TB erweitert werden kann. Wer den Slot für die microSD-Karte übrigens nicht braucht, kann ihn für eine zweite SIM nutzen und so mit einem Gerät auf zwei Nummern parallel erreichbar sein. Ich finde das besonders im Ausland sehr praktisch wo ich mir fast immer eine SIM-Karte hole. Aber auch die Zeiten wo ich mein Firmen- und mein Privathandy mit mir rumschleppe sind vorbei. 

Wem das SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE bis dato übrigens eine Spur zu groß war, der kann sich jetzt freuen: Es gibt neben dem Note10+ mit 6,8“ Display auch das NOTE10 mit 6,3“.

Beide Modelle sind mit nur 7,9mm superschlank und liegen perfekt in der Hand. Hinzukommt noch das Display aus Gorilla Glas 6 (das robusteste, das es derzeit am Markt gibt) - vorbei die Zeiten, dass einem das Handy aus der Hand rutscht und das Display springt. 

Mir bleibt nun nur mehr „Danke“ zu sagen. Danke Samsung, dass ihr mein Leben mit dem GALAXY NOTE10+ wieder um ein ganzes Stück einfacher und effizienter gestaltet habt!
